There is so much change when integrating into new environments. Oftentimes, a lot of emphasis goes on consolidating EMR’s and networks and vital questions over the management of your unstructured data are left unanswered. Who’s going to manage it? Despite these advancements, interoperability concerns are still looming and the amount of disparate data that has to be taken in and processed isn’t going away.

The challenge with this trend is that information is created at more locations than it used to be. Now you have decipher the best way to capture, classify, and centralize it.
On our recent webinar, The Journey to Digital Transformation: Success Stories from Enterprise Health Systems, we polled the audience to see what their organization’s most significant obstacles to improving interoperability were. 33% said, “integrating data from multiple EMR’s” and another 33% said, “concerns regarding security, privacy, risk, and medical fraud”.
Where do you go from here?
This is where a capture solution comes into play. While it can be molded to fit the exact needs of each organization, in general, this process streamlines the digitization of patient health information by automating the indexing process, eliminating manual and risky data entry.
When evaluating the right capture solution for your organization, consider the following…
- Staffing and Resources: What is required to support a capture solution? Do you have the staff to manage this? Can you handle the ebbs/flows in addition to managing and training a whole new company?
- Metrics and Analysis: Do you know the volume of documents that are coming in via email, fax or paper? What percentage of each do you have? How are you separating what should be captured and what shouldn’t be captured?
- Technology: There is no doubt that we have been bombarded with technology and technology terms in reference to automation, especially for capture processes. These technologies have proven to add automation to a capture process but it’s important to make sure you identify the opportunities where a specific offering will generate substantial value and contribute to your organization’s success.
It’s not always about reducing headcount, the goal should be getting accurate information to the knowledge workers that use it. The evaluation process should include, as much as possible, the specific results you would gain from the technology within your environment.
Building centralized and scalable data processes while still effectively managing the influx of medical records is possible. With the right partner, technology, and research, you can improve patient care and your staff’s experience across the entire health system.
